What is a Business Improvement District (BID)?

It’s a question we get asked all the time, so we thought we’d explain!

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined area where local businesses work together to invest in and improve their town centre.

Here in Welwyn Garden City, Wonderful WGC is paid for by businesses, for businesses. We work on behalf of the businesses that pay for us to deliver an agreed Business Plan, shaped around the 3 priorities and needs identified by the businesses.

So, how are we different from the local authority?

A BID is not the same as the council, and we don’t replace the work carried out by the local authority.

Instead, we provide additionality, delivering extra projects, services, activity and investment that sit alongside what Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council provide.

This can include things such as:

✨ Major town centre events and activities
🌸 Business-funded floral displays
🎄 Christmas lights and seasonal activity
📣 Marketing and promotion of Welwyn Garden City
👮 WGC Watch, radios and business crime support
📱 Digital campaigns and social media promotion
🎓 Training, networking and support for businesses
💡 Investment in projects that improve the town centre
🗣️ A collective voice for the town’s business community

The important thing is that our priorities are set by the businesses that pay for us.

Our small but might team exist to support our town centre businesses, strengthen the local economy, encourage people to visit and spend time in Welwyn Garden City, and help make our town centre a better place to work, shop, visit and enjoy.

In simple terms:

- The council provides its statutory services.
- The WGC BID provides additional investment and activity, funded by local businesses, to deliver the priorities agreed by those businesses.

TODAY’S TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE TAKES US BACK TO 2024! 🎾🏅

As part of our look back at 10 years of the WGC BID, today we’re heading back to Summer 2024, when our town centre businesses funded and the WGC BID team organised Summer of Sport!

We brought the excitement of Wimbledon 🎾 and the Paris 2024 Olympics 🏅to Stonehills Square, creating a new way for people to enjoy live sport right in the heart of Welwyn Garden City.

This was a particular favourite of mine, mainly because I absolutely loved putting the deckchairs out every morning and then putting them all away again every evening! 😂🪑

But jokes aside, it was fantastic to see people gathering in the town centre, sitting back and enjoying the live sporting action while grabbing a coffee, lunch or dinner from our fantastic local businesses. ☕🍽️

It was a simple idea, but it created a great atmosphere in the town centre and gave people another reason to spend time, shop, eat and enjoy Wonderful WGC.

Just another example of what can happen when our town centre businesses come together and invest in makingWelwyn Garden City a vibrant place to visit.

🎬 Today’s trip down memory lane takes us back to Cinema On The Green… which, quite rightly, became Screen On The Green!

What started as a small, one-day outdoor cinema event has grown grew over the years into a much larger multi-day event, with multiple films bringing something a little different to Welwyn Garden City town centre.

It’s honestly been one of our favourite events. There’s something special about seeing the town centre transformed into an outdoor cinema and watching people enjoy a film under the evening sky. 🍿🎬

But while we love the event, we also have to be honest about what the data and our businesses are telling us.

In recent years, Screen On The Green hasn’t delivered against the business objectives we agreed for the event. Restrictions around the films that can be shown in the town centre have made it increasingly difficult to attract older teenagers and adult audiences, attendance has been lower, and importantly, we haven’t seen the required level of support for our town centre businesses (basically, people shopping in the shops) we need to justify the investment.

And that’s something we take seriously.

For us, events aren’t simply about putting on something that looks great. Every event is evaluated against its objectives, its value for money and, most importantly, the feedback and needs of our town centre businesses, who ultimately are the ones paying for the event.

So, rather than simply continuing to do the same thing because it’s what we’ve always done, we’re looking at how we can reinvent Screen On The Green to ensure it meets our objectives, supports the businesses, and offers value for money.

Sometimes you have to be prepared to change something you love to make it work better. 💚

Hopefully, if we are successful in our upcoming BID renewal, Screen On The Green can return in the future in a new and refreshed format, one that appeals to a wider audience, delivers greater value for our businesses and meets, and ultimately exceeds, the WGC BID’s business objectives.

TAKING A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE…

Since 2017, the WGC BID has been behind some of the biggest events, campaigns and initiatives our town centre has seen.

As we approach the end of our second BID term and look towards our 10th year of creating a more Wonderful Welwyn Garden City, we thought it was time to take a little trip down memory lane!

From World Food Festivals and Christmas Lights to markets, live entertainment, family fun, campaigns, town centre improvements and initiatives supporting our businesses, we’ve packed a lot into the last few years!

As we approach the end of our second BID term and look towards our 10th year of creating a more Wonderful Welwyn Garden City, we thought it was time to take a little trip down memory lane!

From World Food Festivals and Christmas Lights to markets, live entertainment, family fun, campaigns, town centre improvements and initiatives supporting our businesses, we’ve packed a lot into the last few years!

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking back at some of the events, campaigns and initiatives that have helped make our town centre more vibrant, welcoming and, of course, more WONDERFUL. Starting with the Petit Tour which we helped organise and deliver back in 2017.

A recent planning application has been submitted for 41 Howardsgate (the former CEX shop) by popular chicken restaurant Peckers. We reached out to the team for more information, and this is what they told us:

@peckers_chicken is an independent, family-run fried and grilled chicken restaurant founded by brothers Sanjay and Rishi Chandarana. Launched in Hitchin in 2023, Peckers has since expanded to Stevenage and is now looking forward to bringing its food to Welwyn Garden City.

What makes Peckers different from other chicken shops? Everything is made in-house, from the breading and marinades to the signature sauces, and cooked fresh to order. They use 100% British, Halal-certified chicken, vegetables sourced locally and fresh ingredients, while bringing a personal, family-run approach to every customer.

For the Chandarana brothers, Welwyn Garden City is a particularly special move, as Sanjay lives here and calls Welwyn Garden City home.
